GOYA

G.O.Y.A (Greek Orthodox Youth of America)

This teen youth group involves youth ages 12 through high school. Their involvement in GOYA gives them a place and community to belong to and provides a fun and healthy environment for their development into maturity and adulthood.  GOYA involvement also provides an opportunity for spiritual growth and Christian formation.

Meetings are held every Wednesday at 7:00 pm throughout the year with additional activities provided both at the local and Metropolis level at different times of the year.  Please see the announcements below:

GOYA Activities this week:

Wednesday, May 26thGOYA End-of-Year Party—6-9 PM, at the Adamsons’ neighborhood pool—thanks Mrs. Adamson!—at 3102 Denton Place in Roswell (30075)—the Edgewater Cove neighborhood.  This will be a time for good food, hanging out, and simple summer fun.  We’ll also elect our officers for the next church/school year, and there may even be a slide show!

As has been the tradition in the past, each family is asked to bring a dish to share, according to the following design (by youth’s birthday):

If your son or daughter was born from the 1st to the 5th of the month:  drinks or ice

If born from the 6th to the 10th of the month:  a main dish

From the 11th-15th:  chips, other starchy snacks, or hamburger condiments

16th-20th:  fruit

21st-25th:  vegetable

26th-31st:  dessert

GOYA Officer Elections:

Attached to this email and on the GOYA Facebook page is a list of officer role descriptions.  At the end-of-year party on Wednesday, we will elect new GOYA officers.  In order to nominate someone for an office, please call, email, or text Paul Lundberg no later than noon on Wednesday.  In order to be placed on the ballot, all nominees must accept their nomination.  No person may run for more than one office. Below are the current nominees; those who have accepted their nominations are in boldface type.  Please confirm your willingness to accept a nomination by notifying Paul Lundberg no later than noon on Wednesday.  An asterisk by one’s name indicates that he/she has been nominated for more than one office and must therefore choose the one office for which he/she will make him-/herself available.  The current nominations are:

Youth Stewardship:

We are one tenth of the way to meeting our goal for September, to have at least 20 youth make a stewardship commitment to the parish community.  Cheers to those who have already turned in their youth stewardship card:

  • Stephanie A.
  • Evan P.

Anyone who needs a youth stewardship card may obtain one at the church office from Paul Lundberg.

Coming up:

July 26th-30thChurch Summer Camp—We need help from the GOYA members to make this a great experience for the little kids.  If you are interested in helping, please tell Mr. Paul or contact Mrs. Friday P. directly.

Internet and Cell Phone Safety

As summer approaches along with the increase of freedom and unstructured time that it often includes, please teach and remind youth about the dangers with which our technologically advanced world is fraught:

On the internet, please be aware of the dangers associated with formspring.me, a site that can be integrated with Facebook.  Thanks to Maria and Demetra for raising awareness about this web-based question & answer posting service.  For more information about it, please read the following article:

Courtesy of Penny, this Sunday there will be free booklets about internet safety in the PLC foyer for anyone who wants them.
